'Batman: The Killing Joke' Gets Theatrical Screening Following Comic-Con Premiere

8 Jun, 2016 By: John Latchem

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will hold the world premiere of its direct-to-video animated Batman: The Killing Joke at San Diego Comic-Con International Friday, July 22. The event continues a tradition of DC Universal original movies being screened at the annual fan fest.

In addition, Fathom Events is bringing the movie to select theaters for one night only on July 25. The movie arrives on Digital HD July 26, followed by a DVD and Blu-ray Disc release Aug. 2 (order date June 28), including a deluxe edition of the Blu-ray that includes a Joker figurine.

The Comic-Con screening will include a panel discussion involving the filmmakers and cast members, with final participants yet to be announced.

Based on the acclaimed 1988 graphic novel, the film explores the origins of the Joker as he torments Commissioner Gordon and Batgirl, leading to a showdown with Batman. The highly anticipated film promises to maintain the dark overtones of the comic book and is rated 'R.'

The voice cast includes "Batman: The Animated Series" stars Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprising their roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively, plus Tara Strong as Barbara Gordon and Ray Wise as Gordon.

The Fathom screenings will be held July 25 at 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. local time. In addition to the animated feature, audience members will see a special introduction from Hamill, plus a never-before-seen documentary about how Hamill was cast in this project and what the role means to him as an actor and a fan. The event will conclude with a behind-the-scenes look at the Joker’s dance number.

Tickets for The Killing Joke can be purchased online beginning June 17 via or at participating theater box offices. A list of participating theaters is available at the Fathom website.
