SeaChange, Civolution Partner on Premium VOD Tech

22 May, 2012 By: Chris Tribbey

Video software company SeaChange International and digital watermarking company Civolution have partnered to provide cable operators a new solution for premium video-on-demand.

Premium VOD allows content owners to release titles in a pre-theatrical window via cable and satellite operators, for a higher price. But security concerns have kept it from becoming more than an experiment, according to SeaChange and Civolution. Their solution, which combines watermarking technology and an end-to-end software solution, solves Hollywood’s concerns, they said.

The companies said that one major North American cable operator already is deploying their solution.

“Cable operators can now protect their content in ways they haven’t been able to before,” said SeaChange CTO Steven Davi. “With SeaChange’s software, cable operators have the flexibility to add their choice of content processing vendor. Integrating Civolution’s watermarking software into our end-to-end solution for content ingest, management, monetization and delivery gives cable operators a new tool in their arsenal for content protection and enables access to earlier release window movies. It’s a major breakthrough in getting consumers the content they want sooner, which will generate new revenues and create customer loyalty.”

Civolution’s watermarking is first applied once for each VOD asset and then applied a second time during the streaming of the VOD content to a subscriber. Rights owners then can identify the source of piracy in case of content theft.

“Our new watermarking pre-processor and smart-embedder software accelerates time-to-market for cable [multi-system operators] looking to leverage early-release window content to attract new subscribers, and increase the average revenue per existing subscriber,” said Jean-Michel Masson, SVP of watermarking operations for Civolution. “We’ve created a powerful joint solution with SeaChange that transparently integrates into the VOD workflows already in place by cable operators, and one that meets Hollywood-studio requirements for premium VOD offerings. This is great news for the consumers who are eager to access premium content direct from their home.”
