Roku, manufacturer of an Internet-enabled media player, is touting users with free video-on-demand (VOD) access to the year’s top box office hit, Alice in Wonderland, from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

Specifically, Roku is offering first-time users to Amazon VOD a $5 credit for a movie or episodic television program rental, which includes the option to download Alice.

Saratoga, Calif.-based Roku, which cut its teeth in 2008 as the first media device to stream Netflix movies onto the TV, said users who link to Amazon VOD for the first time will receive a code enabling them to download the movie or other selection for 24 hours.

Roku users already linked to Amazon VOD can watch the Alice in standard-definition for $3.99, or high-definition for $4.99.

Starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton, Alice in Wonderland has generated more than $1 billion at the global box office ($334 million domestically) since its March 5 release. The title was released on DVD/Blu-ray Disc June 1.
