MGM Titles Come to YouTube, Google Play

More than 600 MGM titles, covering everything from The Terminator and Robocop to West Side Story and Moonstruck, now are available for rent on YouTube and Google Play in the United States and Canada, the companies announced.

“MGM is delighted to share our library of classic titles with YouTube and Google Play users,” said John Bryan, president of domestic television distribution for MGM. “We are always looking for opportunities to bring our world-class library to new audiences in innovative ways, which is exactly what this partnership with Google delivers.”

MGM now joins five of the six major studios, Lionsgate, The Weinstein Co., Magnolia Pictures and others who offer content on YouTube and Google Play. Formerly Android Market, Google Play offers content for Android devices and connected HDTVs. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is the last studio that hasn’t signed with Google.

“According to a recent IHS Screen Digest study, online movie watching in the U.S. will double this year and will make up the majority of people’s home entertainment viewing,” Jonathan Zepp, YouTube’s manager of TV and film content partnerships, wrote in a blog post. “Thanks to MGM, you’ll be able to join in this trend and grab its movies online and on the go.”

YouTube and Google Play will add more MGM titles in the coming weeks, Zepp added. Before MGM, Paramount was the most recent studio to ink a deal with YouTube and Google Play, inking a deal to rent approximately 500 movies on April 4.

Catalog titles on YouTube and Google Play rent starting at $2.99 while new-releases rent for $3.99. Movies can be watched once for a 24-hour window over a 30-day period.
