Roku Reaches 1 Billion Streams of Content4 Jan, 2011 By: Erik Gruenwedel
Roku, which helped launch Netflix’s streaming business in 2008, Jan. 4 said it served its 1 billionth stream of content.
The Saratoga, Calif.-based company said its user-base now rivals that of a top 10 cable operator. Roku offers 130 third-party content channels, including Amazon VOD movies, Hulu Plus, MLB.tv and NHL Game Center, among others. Last month, it sold its 1 millionth media player.
Roku said its media players averaged more than 11 hours of playing time per week — a significant amount when compared to the national average of 36 hours TV viewing per week.
