Netflix Says Subs 'Binge Race' Original Series

Netflix claims to have created a new type of television viewer: the binge racer.
The self-proclaimed ‘TV disruptor’ says some subscribers now accomplish in a day what others take weeks to achieve speeding through an entire season of an original program within 24 hours of its release.
The SVOD pioneer said 8.4 million subs have chosen to binge race. Between 2013 and 2016 the number of launch day finishers grew more than 20 times.
Binge racing grew from 200,000 subs in 2013 to more than 5 million in 2017 through September. Ratings-shy Netflix stresses binge racing has no relation to overall viewership, i.e. ratings.
“There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from being the first to finish a story — whether it's the final page of a book or the last moments of [their] favorite TV show,” Brian Wright, VP of original series, said in a statement.
Binge-racing favorites range from 30-minute comedies like “Master of None,” “Glow” and “Dear White People,” to hour-long fare such as “Stranger Things,” “House of Cards,” “Orange Is the New Black” and “The Seven Deadly Sins,” among others.
Notable binge-racing stats:
• Five subs in the United States raced through all five seasons of “House of Cards” the day they were released.
• One French sub has raced through 30 original series this year.
• “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” generated the most global racers in its 24-hour debut. “Fuller House” reigned supreme in Ecuador; “Club de Cuervos” scored No. 1 in Mexico, and Marvel’s "The Defenders” was tops in South Korea.
