Eros International, a Mumbai-based distributor of Indian movies, May 16 announced its subscription streaming service, Eros Now, is available as an app on Internet-enabled Sony TVs and Blu-ray Disc players.
The $7.99 monthly service claims 2 million subscribers in India and access to 55 million users worldwide.
The service’s global app expansion comes as Amazon and Netflix gear up streaming video expansion in India. Prime Video is reportedly the third-most-popular streaming app in the country, behind YouTube and HotStar TV, the latter a subsidiary of Fox affiliate Star India.
Eros International in January said it planned to produce more than 50 movies across multiple languages, making it the largest slate by any Indian studio this year. The company also acquires rights to third-party content on an opportunistic basis.
Rishika Lulla Singh, CEO of Eros Digital, said the Sony brand name should help expand consumer adoption of Eros Now internationally.
“We have always strived to provide our users the best of Indian entertainment with a seamless experience across screens. Eros Now … further[s] our philosophy to be platform agnostic and embracing the very best in technology as we continue to enhance user experience and increase our reach,” Lulla Singh said in a statement.
