Hulu Gets Streaming Rights to 'The Goldbergs'

Hulu Sept. 24 announced it signed a deal with Sony Pictures Television for exclusive streaming rights to ABC comedy “The Goldbergs,” starring Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids) and Jeff Garlin (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) as the parents of Adam, Barry and Erica Goldberg.
In an era before smartphones, gaming consoles and social media, there were Walkmans, Nintendo and camcorders. And 11-year old Adam, armed with a video camera, captures the antics of his nutty, but loving, family while navigating the treacherous waters of middle school.
Hulu Plus will have exclusive access to current-season episodes the day after their network broadcast. “The Goldbergs” launched its third broadcast season Sept. 23.
Hulu Plus’ 10 million subscribers can watch all episodes of the series with limited commercials for $7.99 per month, or with no commercials for $11.99 per month.
The license rights underscore Hulu’s quest to secure exclusive programing, in addition to a slate of original programming, in an effort to challenge SVOD heavyweights Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Video.
“‘The Goldbergs’ … joins full seasons of hits, including ‘Empire,’ ‘You’re The Worst,’ ‘Married,’ ‘The Mindy Project,’ ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ and ‘Nashville,’ among others,” Justin Rutsky, VP of content acquisition, wrote in a blog post.
