Eclectic director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, starring Ryan Gosling; Amazon Studios’ The Neon Demon with Dakota Fanning) is launching his own streaming service.
Dubbed “byNWR.com,” the free service launches in 2018 and is supported in part by London-based Bureau Agency, Harvard Film Archive and Milan Records, with technical assistance from MUBI.
The service will stream largely indie films, including Denmark-born Refn’s movies, in addition to restored classic films. Each quarter “byNWR.com” will focus on content curated by guest editors.
The first-quarter series includes “Regional Renegades: Exploitation Gems from the Southern USA,” featuring Bert Williams’ 1965 horror movie The Nest of the Cuckoo Birds; Shanty Tramp (1967); Curtis Harrington’s Night Tide (1963), which features Dennis Hopper’s first starring role; as well as neorealism drama Spring Night, Summer Night.
“What’s important to understand is that everything we have known about the past no longer applies and 'byNRW' is a platform for the evolution of cinema, where there is going to be unadulterated opportunities to experience culture in many different ways. There will be films that will be the jumping-off point for all other kinds of art experiences,” Refn said at a press conference at the Lumière Film Festival in Lyon, France.
