Shipping membership service to produce third season of canceled BBC series “Ripper Street” for global subscribers
Amazon Feb. 26 formally rebranded its LoveFilm Instant subscription streaming service in the United Kingdom and Germany to Amazon Prime Instant Video — the brand name of its membership shipping, SVOD service in the United States.
The previously-announced move is aimed at countering Netflix’s ongoing international expansion, reportedly directed at France and Germany.
In addition, Amazon said it would pick up a third season of recently canceled BBC period drama “Ripper Street,” starring Matthew Macfadyen. The series, in which Macfadyen heads a team of detectives investigating the Jack the Ripper murders in east London, was dropped last December after two seasons.
The third season of “Street,” which is being co-produced by BBC America, will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime before airing on BBC One, the flagship TV station of the BBC. Production begins in May.
