Mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson has begun offering up to 60 free movies annually with the purchase of select phones.
The London-based company said the PlayNow movie platform allows users to “side-load” movies onto their phone after downloading them to a PC. Users are allowed 90-day access to 15 nondescript titles at a time for the length of their service contract.
Downloaded movies will be automatically formatted to match the user’s phone, including subtitles.
“Consumers are increasingly looking for exciting content and premium entertainment experiences wherever they are,” said Martin Blomkvist, head of content acquisition and management at Sony Ericsson. “By adding a bundled movie proposition … we continue to remove barriers for consumers to easily access entertainment through their mobile phone.”
The company said the movies, which undoubtedly include Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases, would be a country-specific mix of classics and newer titles.
