Report: Samsung Ranked Top Cell Phone Manufacturer

A survey among 30,000 cell phone subscribers in the United States ranked Samsung as the top handset manufacturer overall in May, claiming a 24.8% market share, comScore’s MobiLens service announced July 5.

LG Electronics followed with 21.1% share and Motorola with 15.1% share. Apple, rising 1.2%, landed at No. 4 with an 8.7% share of mobile subscribers, and RIM earned an 8.1% share.

comScore also reported that while 234 million Americans ages 13 and older used mobile devices, 76.8 million of them owned smartphones during the three months ending in May, up 11% from the previous three-month period.

With 38.1% market share, Google Android ranked as the No. 1 operating system among U.S. smartphone subscribers, an increase of 5.1%. Apple claimed the No. 2 spot with 26.6% of the market, up 1.4%. Rounding out the top five were RIM (24.7%), Microsoft (5.8 %) and Palm (2.4%).

In May 69.5% of U.S. mobile subscribers sent text messages on their cell phones, 39.8% used browsers and 38.6% downloaded applications. comScore also found that 28.6% of mobile subscribers are accessing social networking sites or blogs. Additionally, 26.9% of mobile users played games on their devices, and 18.6% listened to music on their phones.
