Blockbuster, CinemaNow Among Top Samsung Apps

7 Dec, 2010 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Technology allowing users to rent movies from Blockbuster On Demand and Best Buy CinemaNow on connected Samsung televisions ranked among the consumer electronics manufacturer’s top 16 downloaded apps.

The Seoul-based company Dec. 2 announced the 1 millionth TV app downloaded globally from its industry-first Samsung Apps store.

The store features 200 (mostly free) apps for its connected TVs, with Hulu Plus, ESPN Next Level and Texas Holdem among the most popular apps.

In the first half of the year, Samsung commanded more than 66% of the U.S. connected TV market, according to research firm The NPD Group. Domestically, Samsung expects the market for smart TVs to reach 6.5 million units by the end of the year and projects demand to grow to 20 million units by 2012.

“Integrating the traditional TV experience with applications and features like 3D bridges the gap between simply consuming programming and interacting with it,” said Boo-keun Yoon, president of Samsung’s visual display business.

Connected devices, apps and 3D are expected to be major showcases at next month’s CES confab in Las Vegas.
