Sky Store Launches Service in Germany, France

Sky Store, British telecom Sky’s digital transactional platform, June 20 began selling movies and TV shows in Germany and France. All purchases include a DVD or Blu-ray Disc copy delivered separately by mail.

Sky said all new-release movies are available two weeks ahead of their packaged-media retail street date. More than 1,000 titles will be made available by the end of the year from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, 21st Century Fox, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Studiocanal, Tele München Gruppe and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

Jérôme Habauzit, analyst with AQOA in Paris, seemed puzzled by the Sky Store presence in France considering the satelitte operator's $4.3 million investment last year in French streaming service Molotov.

"On the other hand, Austria should be included in the Sky [Store] deal," Habauzit wrote in an email.

Indeed, Sky has pay-TV service in Austria and Switzerland. 

Launched in 2014 in the United Kingdom, Sky Store earned 2017 British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) Digital Retailer Initiative of the Year for its Christmas voucher initiative, as well as Digital Retailer of the Year.

Sky said more than 3 million consumers used the service in 2016, making it the largest digital movie retailer for new-releases in the U.K. Revenue doubled to £89 million ($112 million) from £54 million ($68 million) in 2015.
