Amazon Celebrates Prime 10th Birthday

3 Feb, 2015 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Amazon Feb. 3 celebrated the 10th anniversary of its Prime membership program by revealing several milestones, including the fact that period drama “Downton Abbey” is the most-watched program on Prime Instant Video.

Amazon did not disclose its Prime membership base, preferring instead to keep speculation on the front burner with teasers that it has “tens of millions of members,” and it increased U.S. membership 50% in 2014.

Prime Instant Video, which affords Prime members free streaming access to myriad movies and TV shows, didn’t launch until Feb. 22, 2011 — about three years after Netflix bowed its pioneering streaming service.

Prime claims its has 20 million items that can be ordered on its birthday. Amazon claims a Prime member could purchase 856 items a day of their lives and still not order every available Prime item.

The fastest Prime order: 23 minutes for a Prime Now order delivered by bicycle in Manhattan, N.Y.
