Amazon Dec. 26 announced it added 10 million new Prime members during its 20th winter holiday retail period. The e-commerce behemoth didn’t disclose total Prime membership numbers, which, similarly to Netflix streaming viewership, apparently remain strictly confidential.
In addition to free two-day shipping on myriad purchases, Prime Instant Video gives members unlimited streaming access to movies, TV shows and original content.
“We are working hard to make Prime even better and expanding the recently launched Prime Now to additional cities in 2015,” founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.
Meanwhile, Amazon said Guardians of the Galaxy and Maleficent were the top-selling movies on disc. Those titles, along with season five of “The Walking Dead,” and season seven of “Sons of Anarchy” topped digital purchases on Amazon Instant Video. Top streamed titles included The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and season two of Amazon originlal series “Alpha House.”
Amazon said nearly 60% of customers shopped using a mobile device this holiday — a trend it said led to more users beginning their holiday shopping later into the season. Cyber Monday continues to be Amazon’s peak mobile shopping day. Black Friday had the most rapid growth in mobile shopping.
Total domestic holiday sales from the Amazon doubled in 2014. On Cyber Monday, customers globally ordered more than 18 toys per second from a mobile device.
