'Stranger Things' Helps Netflix Close Popularity Gap With HBO16 Sep, 2016
Netflix’s “Stranger Things” in early September became the first digital original series to top Parrot Analytics list of average demand expressions, a ranking of online demand for a show.
The announcement of a second-season for the 1980s-set thriller helped it overtake HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which is in between seasons, in several major markets, raising Netflix’s average above HBO, but it has not achieved this in the majority of countries. In the United States, the monthly averages still have “Game of Thrones” and HBO on top.
“Netflix has produced a worthy challenger to HBO’s crown, but the incredibly high demand for Game of Thrones’ last season means that HBO remains the leading platform for in-demand content,” reads the Parrot Analytics report.
