Projections: 'Turtles' Looking for Big Debut
22 Dec, 2014 By: John Latchem
Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot is looking for a big debut the week ending Dec. 21. The action film, the latest adaptation of the famous comic book, is coming off a $191.2 million haul at the domestic box office.
A No. 1 debut would make it the third straight title to score big following Black Friday, though it will have to contend with strong holdovers such as Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.
Turtles should also find itself atop the rental chart for the week, since Paramount doesn't hold back new releases from Redbox.
Interestingly, Redbox seems to have stopped offering Blu-ray rentals for new Fox titles. This may be part of an overall strategy de-emphasizing Blu-ray by the studio, which has also cut back on the new TV DVD fare it offers on Blu-ray for sellthrough.
