Projections: 'Guardians' Set for Big Launch
15 Dec, 2014 By: John Latchem
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is preparing for a huge debut on disc after a domestic box office haul of $332.3 million, the largest tally of 2014 so far.
The Disney-distributed film is not just the 10th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also a crowd-pleasing sci-fi adventure in the vein of "Star Wars."
Other newcomers such as Warner's Dolphin Tale 2 and Sony Pictures' When the Game Stands Tall will compete with strong holdover Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, from Fox, for a top sales chart spot.
On the rental chart, Guardians' limited first-week availability at Redbox (the kiosk operator doesn't have a distribution agreement with Disney) could limit its ability to climb the charts for a few days. The top titles coming off their 28-day holdbacks are both distributed by Fox: the comedy Let's Be Cops and DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon 2.
