Projections: 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Should Win Battle
15 Sep, 2014 By: John LatchemThe Marvel Studios-produced Captain America: The Winter Soldier, distributed by Disney, should top the DVD and Blu-ray sales charts by a wide margin in the week ending Sept. 14. The superhero actioner grossed $259.8 million in U.S. theaters and had been the year's top-earning film before being recently overtaken by another Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy. It has also been heralded as one of the best Marvel movies to date, and one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, and should have no trouble motivating a wide audience to pick up a copy at retail.
The only other big non-TV release of the week was Fox's Brick Mansions, one of the final films starring the late Paul Walker. The film, a futuristic thriller, underperformed at the box office with $20.4 million domestically, but Walker's involvement might push interest in the home video version enough for it to debut in a relatively high chart spot among holdovers such as Draft Day and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier hasn't been trending as high on Redbox's daily updates (Disney films tend not to have strong Redbox debuts due to murky distribution agreements), so it wouldn't be surprising to see a strong holdover with high rental interest such as Fox's The Other Woman top the rental chart in its seventh week.
