Projections: 'Big Hero 6' Rising to Top Spot
2 Mar, 2015 By: John Latchem
Disney's Big Hero 6 should have no trouble overwhelming the sales charts the week ending March 1. The studio's latest animated hit film is coming off a $220.9 million haul at the domestic box office and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The only other major new releases for the week were Warner's Horrible Bosses 2, a modest box office performer at $54.4 million domestically, and Fox's Sons of Anarchy: The Final Season, a disc release for a popular cable series.
Sony Pictures' Oscar winning Whiplash also came out during the week, but was not receiving as prominent placement on retail shelves as the other two titles.
The rental chart isn't likely to change much, with Universal's Lucy and Fox's Gone Girl repeating in the top spots. Fox's The Book of Life comes off its 28-day embargo at Redbox and should move into a top spot. Big Hero 6 isn't as likely to score a high rental spot for two reasons: Disney movies tend to oversell relatively to their rental performance, and Redbox doesn't have a stocking agreement with Disney, meaning it doesn't always have significant copy depth on street date for Disney titles.
