Projections: A Banner Week for Kristen Bell
12 May, 2014 By: John Latchem
Unless another holdover title rises during the week ending May 11, the biggest threat to unseat the reign of Disney's Frozen looks to be another movie starring Kristen Bell, Warner's Veronica Mars.
Another week on top for Frozen would be its seventh in eight weeks, practically unprecedented for a title in the past decade.
Mars, a continuation of the same-titled TV show, famously came about after producers raised $5.7 million from dedicated fans through a Kockstarter campaign. While it earned just $3.3 million in theaters, it's also the highest-grossing new release from May 6. As Frozen's total weekly unit sales decline over time, a modest push from Mars fans could take advantage of that attrition.
Otherwise, the biggest new release is Warner's direct-to-video aniamted movie Son of Batman, which will likely end up near the top but not in the No. 1 spot unless it experiences a surge of sales beyond what is typical for DC Universe titles.
Another contender for the top spot is Lionsgate's The Legend of Hercules, which barely missed out on the top spot the prevous week.
On the rental chart, Warner's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug comes off its 28-day holdback from Redbox and Netflix and should easily land in the top spot.
