‘Potter’ Flies Into Top Sales Spot Again

27 Apr, 2011 By: Stephanie Prange

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1'

“Harry Potter” continued to hold disc buyers spellbound the week ended April 24. The latest installment in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1, took both the top overall disc sales spot and the top Blu-ray Disc sales spot on Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert charts for a second consecutive week.

Meanwhile, newly released Best Picture Oscar winner The King’s Speech, about King George VI of Britain’s effort to overcome stuttering, made itself heard atop Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week ended April 24. In addition, the drama, released by Anchor Bay Entertainment, took third place on both Nielsen’s Blu-ray and overall sales charts. The film also picked up Academy Awards for Best Actor (Colin Firth), Best Director (Tom Hooper) and Best Original Screenplay (David Seidler).

Warner’s 28-day embargo kept Deathly Hallows out of kiosks and Netflix and at a distant No. 20 on the rental chart, but Warner’s Yogi Bear, which just came off embargo at those outlets, managed to slip into the No. 2 spot on the rental chart. Last week’s top rental, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Country Strong, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, fell to No. 3 on the rental chart from the top spot the previous week.

Meanwhile, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment’s family-friendly Tangled showed it had a strong grip on buyers in its third week of availability. The animated takeoff on the classic “Rapunzel” story took the silver on both Nielsen’s overall and Blu-ray sales charts, moving up from Nos. 3 and 5, respectively, the previous week.

Other notable newcomers on Nielsen’s overall sales chart were 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment’s comedy Gulliver’s Travels, starring Jack Black, at No. 8 and Disney’s High School Musical spinoff, Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, starring Ashley Tisdale, at No. 9. Sony’s Salt, starring Angelina Jolie, debuted at No. 18 on Nielsen’s overall sales chart, with re-releases of Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Pinocchio entering the overall sales chart at Nos. 14 and 16, respectively.
