NPD: Kiosk, Transactional VOD Usage Make Market Gains in 2013
25 Jul, 2013 By: Erik GruenwedelRental consumers increasingly chose kiosks and multichannel video distributors over more-traditional rental options in the first six months of 2013 than during the same period in 2012, according to new data from The NPD Group.
Kiosks, led by Redbox, again were the most popular choice for movie rentals, accounting for 39% of rentals in the first half of the year compared with 38% in 2012. Transactional VOD via cable rose to 18%, up 4% compared with the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the market share for brick-and-mortar video stores dropped 1% to 17% compared with last year, while by-mail services such as Netflix lost 4% market share, dropping to 22%.
The market share for transactional VOD rentals over the Internet held steady at 3%.
The NPD findings do not track subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Instant Video, Redbox Instant by Verizon and Hulu Plus.
