Animated hit sells 2 million units since its Nov. 11 release
DreamWorks Animation’s Nov. 11 retail release of How to Train Your Dragon 2 has 2 million combined DVD, Blu-ray Disc and Digital HD copies — the latter a record for distributor 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
Fox didn’t disclose the breakdown between physical and digital unit sales.
Fox’s all-time record packaged-media release remains James Cameron’s Avatar, which sold 6.7 million DVD and Blu-ray copies in its first four days of retail release in 2010. Ironically, that futuristic blockbuster came before the advent of Digital HD sales.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the highest-grossing animated title in 2014, with $619 million in global ticket sales.
