'Flight' Soars on Sales and Rental Charts; 'Peter Pan' Tops BD Chart

Two new releases landed atop the national home video sales charts the week ended Feb. 10.

Paramount’s Flight rode its $93.8 million theatrical gross to a first-place finish on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales and now includes Walmart, along with other big retailers.

Meanwhile, Walt Disney Studios’ Peter Pan, the 1953 animated classic that has never before been available on Blu-ray Disc, bowed at No. 1 on Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Peter Pan bowed at No. 3 on First Alert, just behind Sony Pictures’ Hotel Transylvania (No. 1 the week before), selling 72% as many copies as Flight. On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, Flight debuted at No. 2, selling about 53% as many units as Peter Pan, Nielsen research shows.

Three other new releases also ended up in the First Alert top 10: Tyler Perry’s Madea Gets a Job, a direct-to-video presentation of a stage play from Lionsgate, at No. 4; Lionsgate’s Alex Cross ($25.9 million at the domestic box office), which also stars Perry, in a rare dramatic role as a police detective in Detroit tracking down a brutal assassin, at No. 5; and the Sony Pictures comedy Here Comes the Boom ($45.2 million), with Kevin James and Salma Hayek, at No. 6.

Here Comes the Boom and Alex Cross debuted at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

On Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart, Flight debuted at No. 1, with Here Comes the Boom bowing at No. 2. Neither Paramount nor Sony delay shipping new releases to certain rental outlets. Hotel Transylvania, the previous week’s top rental, slipped to No. 3.
