Shout! Factory Distributing Gwen Stefani's Animated Kids TV Series

6 Feb, 2017 By: Erik Gruenwedel

Shout! Factory Feb. 6 announced a North American license agreement with Canadian-based DHX Media to distribute Gwen Stefani’s animated kids TV series “Kuu Kuu Harajuku” on DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Grammy winner Stefani sought to create a TV show that empowers young girls’ self-expression, creativity and individuality. The 26 episodes of “Kuu Kuu Harajuku” follow the adventures of the band “HJ5” — Love, Angel, Music, Baby and G — through their world of music, fashion and style. The series airs on Nickelodeon.

“The U.S. market is a huge territory for us and … Shout! Factory understands the market, and importantly for us, the kids’ sector, and we feel they are the ideal company to take this highly original series beyond broadcast into DVD,” Mark Shoeman, territory manager at DHX Media, said in a statement.

Children’s fare continues to be a strong niche market underscored by kids-centric streaming platforms such as Hulu Kids, Netflix Kids and Nickelodeon’s Noggin.com, among others.

Shout! Factory plans a strategic rollout of the series this year through Shout’s kids & family imprint, Shout! Factory Kids.

“We are incredibly excited about this new relationship with DHX Media and look forward to presenting this imaginative and highly entertaining series on family home entertainment shelves,” said Melissa Boag, SVP of kids & family entertainment at Shout! Factory.
