‘Moneyball’ Tops List of Oscar Nominees on Disc

24 Jan, 2012 By: John Latchem

'Moneyball'

Of the nine Best Picture nominees for the 84th Academy Awards announced Jan. 24, only four are already available on disc. These include The Help, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball and The Tree of Life.

Moneyball, on DVD and Blu-ray from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, secured the most nominations of the four, with six. In addition to Best Picture, the baseball film snagged nominations for Brad Pitt as Best Actor, Jonah Hill as Best Supporting Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Film Editing and Sound Mixing.

However, Moneyball was tied with War Horse for the third-most number of nominations. Best Picture frontrunners Hugo scored 11 and The Artist nabbed 10.

Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, on disc from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, secured additional nominations for Best Director, Best Original screenplay and Art Direction.

The Help, distributed on disc by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, also secured four nominations, including Best Actress for Viola Davis and Best Supporting Actress for Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer.

The Tree of Life, on DVD and Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, totaled three noms, adding Cinematography and Terrence Malick as Best Director to its tally.

The other Best Picture nominees include The Descendants, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and War Horse.

In other major categories, Christopher Plummer was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners (Universal Studios Home Entertainment); Demián Bichir earned a Best Actor nom for A Better Life (Summit); Nick Nolte was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for Warrior (Lionsgate); and Universal’s Bridesmaids earned nominations for Original Screenplay and Melissa McCarthy for Best Supporting Actress.

In the Best Animated Feature Film category, three of the five nominees are distributed on disc by Paramount Home Media Distribution. Kung Fu Panda 2 and Rango are available now, while Puss in Boots will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Feb. 24. In addition, Paramount will re-release Rango in theaters starting Jan. 27. The other two nominated films are foreign entries: A Cat in Paris, from France, and Chico & Rita, from Spain.

Several of the nominees already available on disc secured noms in technical categories. Transformers: Dark of the Moon (Paramount) and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 (Warner Home Video) each secured three nominations, including for Best Visual Effects.

The Oscar announcement also offer studios a chance to re-promote older titles with tie-ins to the current nominees. For example, Music Box Films is touting the availability of French spy spoofs OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies and OSS 117: Lost in Rio, directed by Michel Hazanavicius and starring Jean Dujardin, both nominated for The Artist.
