‘The Help’ Leads Golden Globe Nominees on Disc

'The Help'


The Dec. 15 announcement of nominees for the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards yielded a substantial list of titles already available on disc.

Leading the way is The Help, on DVD and Blu-ray from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment, which secured five nominations: Best Motion Picture — Drama, Best Actress for Viola Davis, Best Supporting Actress for Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer, and Best Song for “The Living Proof.”

The Help was the only nominee among the best drama films already available on disc. Two other nominees are slated for DVD and Blu-ray releases in January, both from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment: Moneyball (Jan. 10) and The Ides of March (Jan. 17). Other nominees in the category include The Descendants, Hugo and War Horse.

Ides and Moneyball each received four nominations. Ides earned additional noms for Ryan Gosling as Best Actor, George Clooney as Best Director, and for its screenplay. Moneyball received nominations for Best Actor for Brad Pitt, Best Supporting Actor for Jonah Hill, and for Best Screenplay.

In the Best Motion Picture — Comedy category, one of the five nominees, Bridesmaids, is already on disc, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The film also received a nomination for Best Actress for Kristen Wiig.

Another Best Motion Picture — Comedy nominee, Midnight in Paris, hits DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 20 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The film received four total nominations, also scoring Best Actor for Owen Wilson, as well as Best Director and Best Screenplay for Woody Allen.

Also, Best Motion Picture — Comedy nominee 50/50 hits DVD and Blu-ray Jan. 24 from Summit Entertainment. It also earned a Best Actor nomination for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Other best comedy movie nominees include The Artist and My Week With Marilyn.

On the TV side, nominees for Best Drama Series include “American Horror Story,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Boss,” “Game of Thrones” and “Homeland.” None are yet on disc, though Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season hits on DVD and Blu-ray Jan. 10 from HBO Home Entertainment, and Game of Thrones: The Complete First Season hits March 6 on DVD and Blu-ray, also from HBO.

Best Comedy Series nominees include “Enlightened,” “Episodes,” “Glee,” “Modern Family” and “New Girl.” The second seasons of both “Glee” and “Modern Family” are available on DVD and Blu-ray from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Best Miniseries/TV Movie nominees include Cinema Verite, Downton Abbey, The Hour, Mildred Pierce and Too Big to Fail. Downton Abbey is available on DVD and Blu-ray From PBS Distribution. The Hour is available on DVD from BBC Video. And Mildred Pierce will debut on DVD and Blu-ray Jan. 3 from HBO.

Winners of the Golden Globes will be announced Jan. 15.
