Sony Computer Entertainment America Nov. 16 said it will offer transactional video-on-demand (VOD) functionality to the PlayStation 3 video game system through an agreement with Vudu.
Beginning Nov. 23, PS3 owners will have access to more than 4,000 movies in high-definition ($5.99 each) available the same day as the packaged media release. Standard definition catalog titles will be available starting at $2 for a 48-hour viewing window.
PS3 owners with a network account can download the Vudu app in the “media” section of the PS Store and then access it under the “video” icon on the XMB menu.
Vudu, which is owned by Walmart, markets movie download software embedded in select Internet connected HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc players from LG, Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba and Vizio. It is also available on a PC or Mac via the Boxee Box platform.
“With the addition of the Vudu app to our free PlayStation Network, users will have another way to access entertainment, with thousands of HD movies available instantly in the comfort of their own home,” said Peter Dille, SVP, marketing and PlayStation Network, SCEA.
New Vudu customers receive a $5.99 credit to watch a free HD movie.
PS3 also allows Netflix subscribers access to the online DVD rental pioneer’s movie streams through a free app.
