Pirated DVDs: The Ultimate Political Swag

Societal indifference to pirated DVD movies took a new twist when illegal copies of a movie starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson were unknowingly circulated to legislators in Sacramento.
Lobbyists representing the Los Angeles County probation officers recently distributed counterfeit discs of Gridiron Gang (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) featuring Johnson as a do-gooder coach who instills values in wayward youths through football.
Upon seeing the unmarked discs on lawmakers desks, a Los Angeles Times reporter asked if the copies were legal, which upon inspection, they were found not to be.
“We had no idea that they were unauthorized copies,” the L.A. County Deputy Probation Officers Union said in a statement.
The union said it notified the Motion Picture Association of America, which is conducting an investigation. The discs were replaced with legitimate copies.
“It just goes to show what a widespread problem piracy is, that a contractor would feel comfortable providing pirated DVDs to a law enforcement group,” Mike Gatto (D-Silver Lake) told the Times.
