Sony Updates 'Cloudy' App

23 Jan, 2014 By: Chris Tribbey

CULVER CITY, Calif. — Cody Cameron, co-director of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, had his hands on nearly every aspect of the film, save one.

“I didn’t get to do the app,” he lamented Jan. 22, speaking at a press day for the film’s home entertainment release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. “They bring in stuff for us to look at and make suggestions. We did get to try out the games before anyone else!”

For the Jan. 28 disc releases of the film, the studio went all out for the updated companion “Foodimal Funimal” app, available for both Apple and Android devices. Those who sync their Wi-Fi-connected Blu-ray Disc with the app can access exclusive characters and bonus activities.

But Joe Burg, manager of worldwide content development at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, said Sony wanted to make sure the app was a blast for everyone who wanted to access it.

“Everybody who’s tried it seems pretty jazzed about it,” he said. “We felt it was important to keep the activities available [from the previous version] while offering a lot of new content.”

The movie saw our heroes Flint, Sam and their friends save the Foodimals (come-to-life half-food, half-animal creatures) in the film, and the app takes the story further, letting users access five new mini games:

■ “Tickle Barry” has users trying to catch Barry, double tapping him as he crosses the screen.

■ “Pickle Fishing with Tim” asks users to help the Pickles reel in sardines.

■ “Matchimal” is a Foodimal take on the card-matching memory game.

■ “Find a Foodimal” has Foodimals hidden around the living room, offering an
augmented reality experience.

■ “Cheespider Splat” has users saving Foodimals by using a cheese-web to catch them.

Those who sync the app to the Blu-ray can enhance each game and unlock new Foodimals as they progress. The app also incorporates “The Cloudy Shake” game from previous versions, which lets users pick different ingredients, blend them together, and asks the cast of the movie to rate the shake.
