Content license agreement echoes comments from Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who said Spanish-language soap operas “telenovelas” would be key to its Latin America programming
Netflix reportedly has signed a multiyear content license agreement with Grupo Televisa SA, the largest Spanish-language broadcaster, for streaming rights to more than 3,000 hours of programming.
Netflix, which plans to bow a streaming service in 43 Latin America countries, including Mexico and the Caribbean, at the end of the year, acquired the rights to a large number of telenovelas — Spanish-language soap operas — according to Bloomberg, which broke the story.
Los Gatos, Calif.-based Netflix also inked a similar deal with TV Azteca SAB, giving it content from Mexico’s two dominant broadcasters.
