Netflix is quietly set to sell its critically acclaimed original series “House of Cards” on Blu-ray Disc and DVD beginning June 11, and distributed by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Amazon is selling House of Cards: The Complete First Season for $65.99 on Blu-ray and $55.99 on DVD.
The 13-episode series starring Kevin Spacey as ethically challenged House Majority Whip Francis Underwood, began streaming on Netflix Feb. 1.
Netflix is spending $100 million producing two seasons (26 episodes) of “Cards,” which is a reboot of 1990s BBC series. Following its February launch, it was Netflix's most-watched program, according to chief content officer Ted Sarandos; spawning binge viewing with significant numbers of subscribers watching at least five episodes during the first week.
Per its recent history, Netflix issued no formal statement about the pending packaged media release as it continues to focus on its streaming business.
CEO Reed Hastings did mention the possibility of selling “Cards” on disc during the service’s most recent fiscal call.
