Updated app underscores rising penetration of Android platform in smartphone and tablet market heretofore dominated by Apple
Netflix has bowed an updated Android app that allows smartphones and Android 3.x (Honeycomb) tablets in North America using the Google-based platform easier access to the Los Gatos, Calif.-based service’s subscription video-on-demand movies and TV shows.
The Netflix 1.5 app is available for free in the Android Market — the latter representing nearly 50% of the smartphone market by 2012, according to recent Gartner research. Indeed, nearly 340 million lower-cost Android smartphones (less than $150) will ship worldwide by 2015, according to new research from In-Stat.
“Netflix members now have even greater flexibility in watching TV episodes and movies wherever and whenever they want,” Roma De, director of product management, said in a Netflix blog post.
Separately, David Miller, research director with Caris & Co. in Los Angeles, said in an Oct. 18 note that Netflix should announce additions of more than 4.9 million subscribers globally when it reports third-quarter financial results (ended Sept. 30) on Oct. 24.
