SOPA Vote Delayed

23 Dec, 2011

The House Judiciary Committee recently delayed debate on the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) to 2012, leaving potential amendments to the controversial bill unresolved.

SOPA has received widespread support in the entertainment industry as an effective way to combat overseas piracy. It would give the courts unprecedented power to shut down foreign websites that deal in illegal and pirated goods.

However, some Internet companies, including Google, have come out against the measure, saying it has the potential to restrict the Internet and give the government too much power over what’s available on the web.
