Starting Dec. 20 the special-edition version of Avatar on iTunes will include interactive features, a move intended to promote digital ownership, according to 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.

The “Avatar iTunes Extras Special Edition” is available for preorder, lists for $19.99 for high-def ($14.99 standard), and includes a feature that allows viewers to interact with the performance capture and visual effects levels in 17 scenes. Dubbed “Green Screen X-ray,” the unique feature offers a view of original green screen footage while the film plays.

“Digital platforms like iTunes usher in new ways to interact with and watch movies like Avatar,” said Aubrey Freeborn, SVP of marketing and product management for worldwide VOD and electronic sellthrough for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. “These new interactive features enhance the experience and encourage digital ownership.”

The digital special edition also includes the original screenplay by director James Cameron, his "scriptment" novella with some scenes broken out into dialogue, 1,700 film images and more.
