Apple’s iPad dominated the market for media tablets in 2010, comprising 85% of sales, according to full-year figures reported by ABI Research.

There was an upswell in the tablet market, as well as in certain consumer electronics devices, during the second half of the year, the firm reports.

“Device categories including netbooks and mobile broadband-enabled eBook Readers showed gains in year-over-year shipment numbers in 2010,” according to Jeff Orr, ABI’s senior practice director. “The hype that media tablets were displacing portable computers and dedicated CE device purchases simply didn’t become a reality.”

“With increasing choices for consumers and greater opportunities for businesses to consider ultra-mobile devices, we expect multiple device categories to benefit in the near-term,” he added.

Coming in a comparatively remote second place was Samsung’s Galaxy Tab with about 8% of the tablet market share, while Archos’ Internet Tablet had 2%. These top three vendors accounted for 95% of the media tablet market.

However, Orr said he anticipates between 40 million and 50 million media tablets will ship worldwide in 2011, particularly those hoping to rival the iPad with “low-feature and low-cost designs.”
