Paramount Famous Productions has started principal photography on Mean Girls 2, a sequel to the high-school comedy Mean Girls, which starred Lindsay Lohan.
Melanie Mayron will direct, shooting in Atlanta. The follow-up to the 2004 hit centers on new student Abby (Jennifer Stone of “Wizards of Waverly Place”), an unpopular girl whose father pays another student, Jo (Meaghan Jette Martin of Camp Rock and its sequel), to befriend her, as the two girls take on the popular mean girls, “The Plastics.” The film also will star Maiara Walsh (“Desperate Housewives”), Nicole Gale Anderson (“Jonas”), Claire Holt (“H2O: Just Add Water”), Latin pop star Diego Boneta and Tim Meadows reprising his role as the high-school principal.
“Mean Girls 2 delivers more of the teen comedy that audiences loved in the original Mean Girls, and we’re thrilled to have Melanie Mayron, the talented director and actress, at the helm,” said Louis Feola, president, Paramount Famous Productions. “This brand new story, with our great cast, takes a fresh and funny look at the pressures of high-school friendships and the struggle to fit in with a whole new level of contemporary meanness that today’s audience will relate to.”
Mean Girls 2 will be released in the first quarter of 2011. Distribution plans have not yet been finalized.
