Doc and concert film highlights meteoric rise of hip-hop artist DeAndre “Soulja Boy” Cortez Way
Image Entertainment June 16 said it acquired the North American rights to Soulja Boy — The Movie, a documentary and concert film showcasing the life of hip-hop artist DeAndre Cortez Way.
Directed by Oscar-nominated Peter Spirer (Notorious B.I.G. Bigger than Life, Tupac Shakur: Thug Angel), the film will be released this fall across most platforms, including theatrical and home entertainment.
By the age of 17 (in 2007), Way became an Internet sensation with self-released “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” which precluded a recording contract. That same year, his first album, , debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top 100.
The film reveals Soulja Boy’s creative intensity and introduces his entourage: family and musical collaborators who help illustrate how someone so young achieved stardom so quickly.
“I think sometimes the press, the public and his peers dismiss him due to lack of understanding or jealousy, and that’s where I hope my film comes in — a straightforward, intimate look at a talented young man,” Spirer said in a statement.
