Report: HDTV Prices on the Rise

13 Jul, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

For the third straight month, average prices for HDTVs in the United States rose in June, thanks to the increased availability of high-priced 3DTV sets, according to a new IHS iSuppli report.

The average price of a flat-panel TV rose about $10 month-to-month to $1,133, the research firm estimates.

“The biggest pricing increases for flat-panel televisions last month were among the new 3D models employing active shutter glasses, the most popular type of three-dimensional set on the market today,” said Riddhi Patel, director for television systems and retail services at IHS. “There is an increasing number of models with 3D capability in the product mix that have higher than average prices. These sets drove price increases for the entire flat-panel television market in the United States in June.”

The price gap between 3DTVs using active shutter glasses and those using passive glasses was particularly pronounced during June, Patel said, with active shutter sets costing 9% more for sets 40 inches to 49 inches and 14% more for sets 50 inches and larger.
