Digital platform owned by U.K. retailer Tesco offers 1,000 loyalty points and free pizza to consumers of the popular HBO series
Less than 48 hours after the fourth season of HBO’s popular series "Game of Thrones" concluded its U.S. broadcast June 15, blinkbox made the entire season available for digital purchase (£17.99 in standard-definition) in the United Kingdom — the first retail outlet anywhere in the world.
In addition, blinkbox, which is owned by U.K. retail behemoth Tesco, offered consumers 1,000 Tesco Clubcard points (worth about £10) and free pizza with the digital purchase. An additional 250 points (£2.50) are available with the digital purchase of any of the previous seasons of “Thrones” — or 750 points (£7.50) in total.
In short, Tesco consumers can purchase all 10 digital episodes of season four for an effective price of (£7.99), or $13.58.
HBO has not announced a retail date for “Game of Thrones: Season Four” on disc or digital in the United States.
Amazon in the U.S. is selling digital access to the third season of “Game of Thrones” for $28.99 in standard-definition. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack of Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season, which includes a digital copy, was released at retail Feb. 18 and retails for $39.99 — 50% off SRP.
Tesco, which is one of the largest packaged-media retailers in the U.K., is selling the third-season DVD for £24.00 ($40.80).
The exclusive blinkbox pizza and points offer for the fourth season will feature Tesco’s biggest-ever marketing blitz for a single TV title, supported by TV advertising and digital, social, video and email communications, according to managing director Adrian Letts.
“This represents a watershed moment for blinkbox movies and TV,” Letts said in a statement. “It’s our most generous giveaway ever and proves that we are committed to offering the very latest and best TV without subscription and rewarding customers for choosing us with exclusive offers.”
