SVOD Programs Dominate Golden Globes TV Nominations

10 Dec, 2015 By: John Latchem

The Golden Globes nominations Dec. 10 were a telling indicator of the widespread effect SVOD services have had on television viewing, with original programming from Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Video accounting for more than 25% of the nominees in the television categories (14 of 55 possible noms).

The biggest impact came in the Best Comedy or Musical Television Series category, where four of the five nominees were SVOD shows: Netflix's "Orange Is the New Black," Hulu's "Casual," and Amazon's "Transparent" and "Mozart in the Jungle." HBO's "Silicon Valley" (and not reigning Emmy champ "Veep") was the only broadcast or cable network show in the mix. It's Hulu's first-ever Golden Globe nomination.

In addition, Netflix's "Narcos" garnered a nomination for Best Drama Television Series, and Netflix even secured one nomination in the film categories: Best Supporting Actor for Idris Elba in Beasts of No Nation.

Other Best TV Drama Series nominees include HBO's "Game of Thrones," Sony Pictures' "Outlander," Fox's "Empire" and Universal's "Mr. Robot."

In the movie categories, only one of the five Best Motion Picture Drama nominees has made its way to home video so far: Warner's Mad Max: Fury Road, which seems to have ridden overwhelming fanboy enthusiasm to a slew of awards-season recognition. The other nominees are Lionsgate's Room, Universal's Spotlight, Fox's The Revenant and the Weinstein Company's Carol, the top overall nominee with five total.

Two of the Best Motion Picture Comedy or Musical nominees are already available on disc: Universal's Trainwreck and Fox's Spy. Also nominated in the category was Ridley Scott's The Martian, which Fox releases on Digital HD Dec. 22 and Blu-ray/DVD Jan. 12. New theatrical releases Joy (Fox) and The Big Short (Paramount) round out the category.

Current home video champ Inside Out, from Disney and Pixar, earned a nomination for Best Animated Feature, as did Lionsgate's Shaun the Sheep Movie.

Winners will be announced at the 73rd Golden Globes ceremony Jan. 10. The event will be broadcast on NBC.
