Fox Releasing 100 Classics Digitally to Mark 100 Years

1 Oct, 2015 By: John Latchem

As part of its 100th anniversary celebration, 20th Century Fox is restoring and digitally releasing 100 films spanning the silent era to the 1990s.

The studio traces its origins to the 1915 founding of Fox Films, which merged with 20th Century Pictures in 1935 to form the larger studio that we know today.

Oct. 2, Fox released five five classic films on Digital HD for the first time: F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise (1927), Drums Along the Mohawk (1939), Man Hunt (1941), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953) and The Flight of the Phoenix (1965).

More films will follow throughout the year, including 10 that have never been released on any home video format: the Raoul Walsh classics The Red Dance (1928), The Cock-Eyed World (1929), The Bowery (1933), Hello Sister (1933) and Sailor’s Luck (1933); John Ford’s Men Without Women (1935), Will Rogers in State Fair (1933), Shirley Temple in Mr. Belvedere Goes to Washington (1949), the Marilyn Monroe documentary Marilyn (1963) and Metropolitan (1935), the first film from 20th Century Fox.

Fox representatives told Variety that digital distribution is a potential boon to the appreciation and re-discovery of older films.

“You’re not trying to hold shelf space in a retail outlet,” said Mike Dunn, president of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. “It allows you to have more of your catalog readily available, because you put it on iTunes and it stays there. You’re not being judged by how many units it sells. Services like iTunes want to be a completists.”

Apple will have a dedicated iTunes landing page featuring the newly available titles at .

“Acquiring movies is so easy now,” Dunn told Variety. “You read about something and maybe there’s a reference to a filmmaker’s historical work, and my thumb moves across my phone and I’ve bought it.”

“We are custodians of a great legacy of filmmakers whose contributions here span 100 years,” said Jim Gianopulos, chairman and CEO of 20th Century Fox Film. “We owe their work our best efforts to preserve and protect it, and to make these important films accessible in their best possible presentation for generations to come.”
