Avatar will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on Earth Day, April 22, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment confirmed March 16.

The Blu-ray comes priced at $39.99 and will include a DVD copy. The single-disc DVD will be priced at $29.98. No special features will be included with either edition, and the lack of bonuses is a first for a new theatrical release on the Blu-ray format, the studio said. Producer Jon Landau told the Los Angeles Times the lack of special features on the Blu-ray is intended to free up space for "the best picture and sound possible."

Fox is promising Avatar DVDs and Blu-rays with bonus features in November, though the studio said there would not be a 3D Blu-ray release in 2010. Director James Cameron said in early February that Avatar would be released on Earth Day, though Fox warned that a 3D Blu-ray would not be among the initial releases.

Fox said Cameron is expected to attend a March 23 press event in West Hollywood to discuss the release.

Pulling in $730 million at the domestic box office, Avatar has become the No. 1 box office film of all time, far outdistancing itself from No. 2 Titanic ($600 million).

France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands will have first crack at the home entertainment releases April 21, with North America, Brazil, Russia and China seeing the release on the 22nd. The rollout to a dozen other countries will conclude with Italy on May 6.

Avatar took in another $1.9 billion outside of the United States, also a record.
