Roma Downey launches faith-based "Little Angels"

LOS ANGELES — Since 20th Century Fox’s “Little Angels” line revolves around Bible stories, who better to help tell them than Roma Downey, the star of the long-running “Touched by an Angel” series?

“It’s been in development for a year, and to finally roll it out to the world, it’s very exciting,” Downey said during a Feb. 7 launch event for “Little Angels.” “Fox has been amazing as well.”

The preschool DVD series, including Little Angels: 123’s, Little Angels: ABC’s and Little Angels: Animals, streets Feb. 14 at $14.98 each. The animated titles combine practical learning skills with the spiritual, moral and ethical lessons from the Bible. The series originally aired on The Christian Broadcasting Network.

The series revolves around preschool twins Alex and Zoe, who have eight angels watching over them — they’re painted on the ceiling of their bedroom. The angels come to life when the twins need them most, leading them in and out of stories from the Bible, teaching them lessons as simple as the ABCs and as deep as basic morality — when mom and dad aren’t around, of course.

“It’s primarily a teaching tool,” Downey said. “Values, caring, sharing, finding inner courage. But we have all the best intentions of making it fun too. If it wasn’t exciting, they wouldn’t be as fun.

“My hope is it fills not just their heads, but their hearts.”

Downey said she was pleased Fox chose to include digital copies with the DVDs, pointing out how tech-savvy children are today, and that “it can keep them busy in the back seat of the car.”

The franchise also has an Apple application for iPads and iPhones, which includes a daily prayer read by Downey, illustrations and interactive scenes from the “Little Angels” videos, and games.
