16 Nov, 2011 By: Ashley Ratcliff

Kids First is searching for eight children to serve as official film critics for a year.

The Kids First program aims to teach youngsters positive media behavior and critical thinking, writing and public speaking skills. 2012 winners will attend red carpet events and advance movie screenings, review upcoming family films, interview celebrities and blog about new films.

Applicants, ages 6 to 14, must submit both a written and videotaped review of one of the official Kids First Film Critics Search titles: Happy Feet, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, Glee: Season 2, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World and Barbie: A Perfect Christmas. The contest runs through Dec. 31.

Of the 24 finalists, 20 are chosen by public votes — via — and a special committee will select four additional finalists. Celebrity judges will select eight winners and four alternates, one for each age group.

Judges include Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Landmark Theaters and Magnolia Pictures; Ben Lyons, E! film critic and “Good Morning America” contributor; Thelma Adams, author of Playdate; and George Pennacchio of the ABC7 Eyewitness News team in Los Angeles.

Industry supporters of the Kids First Film Critics campaign include Amazon.com, Anchor Bay Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, Warner Home Video and WonderWorld Entertainment, in addition to nonprofits such as the National Education Association, National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Council of Women’s Organizations.
