DLNA Certifies First Application

2 Feb, 2011 By: Chris Tribbey

The Digital Living Network Alliance has certified its first application under its new software certification program, Skifta for Android, a media shifting service developed by Qualcomm Services Labs.

Previously only hardware had been DLNA-certified.

The application allows consumers to access and play their digital media from any source, including cloud-based, and also stream that media to any DLNA-enabled consumer electronics device. The beta version of the application is available as a free download in Android Marketplace for smart phones running Android version 2.2 and higher.

“We are proud that the Skifta Android application has become the first DLNA-certified software application,” said Bruce Jackson, VP of technology at Qualcomm Services Labs. “The Skifta application demonstrates our commitment to DLNA and to making the smartphone central to the connected home and lifestyle.

“The Skifta application creates the potential for tens of millions of smartphones and tablets to run DLNA-certified software and stream multimedia content reliably to devices around the home,” Jackson added.

By 2014 there will be an estimated 2 billion DLNA-certified devices in homes worldwide.
