El Rey Network, the English-language pay-TV network founded by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures, March 1 announced it will make for the first time original Mexican professional wrestling series 'Lucha Underground' available on iTunes.
Co-created by reality-TV producer Mark Burnett and MGM Television, “Lucha Underground” episodes are available the day after their network air for $1.99 standard definition, $2.99 high-definition. Season 1 is available for $34.99 SD/$44.99 HD; and $29.99 SD/39.99 HD for a Season 2 season pass.
“Lucha Underground” attempts to introduce American viewers to professional wrestling south of the border that pre-dates World Wrestling Entertainment by nearly a century. The series showcases high-flying aerial maneuvers, slingshot moves, dramatic masks, intricate, rapid-fire combinations and distinctive wrestling techniques that underscore lucha libre, one of Mexico’s most popular sports.
In 2006, Jack Black starred in Nacho Libre, a comedy spoof based on a real-life Catholic priest who wrestled to support his Mexican orphanage.
Similar to WWE, “Lucha Underground” features masked villains and heroes who face off for wrestling supremacy. The weekly series provides viewers with a visceral and explosive experience, focusing on the artistry, originality, intense action and over-the-top characters that have come to define this long-standing Mesoamerican heritage dating back to 1863.
“Lucha Underground” on iTunes includes all 39 episodes from Season 1, the first five episodes of Season 2, and additional new episodes the day after they air on El Rey Network (Wednesdays at 8PM ET/PT). Through March 28th, viewers can get the Season 2 premiere of “Lucha Underground” for free, and the Season 2 trailer will be available for free indefinitely.
