'Avengers' Assemble on Disc Sept. 25

After a record-setting run in theaters, Marvel Studios’ superhero epic The Avengers arrives on disc Sept. 25 (order date Aug. 14) from Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.

The Joss Whedon-directed film, based on the Marvel comic book, is the sixth in a cycle that teams heroes Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans) and The Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), following individual films for each of those characters (and two for Iron Man). Other stars include Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.

The film has grossed more than $601 million domestically and $1.44 billion worldwide, good for No. 3 all-time on both lists behind Avatar and Titanic. Along the way, the film set records for highest opening weekend ($207 million) and fastest to $500 million.

The Avengers arrives on home video in a single-DVD configuration at $29.99, a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack at $39.99 and a four-disc 3D Blu-ray combo pack with DVD and digital copy for $49.99.

The DVD includes a Whedon commentary and an “Assembling the Ultimate Team” featurette. The Blu-ray versions include the DVD extras, plus Disney Second Screen functionality, the featurette “A Visual Journey,” deleted scenes, a gag reel and a music video for Soundgarden’s “Live to Rise.” The four disc combo pack includes a download of music inspired by the film.

Consumers who download “The Avengers Initiative: A Marvel Second Screen App” can gain exclusive content in July and August leading up to street date. Content includes special access to the S.H.I.E.L.D. database, invitations to special missions, links to character profiles, interactive comic books and more.

In addition, Amazon is taking preorders for a 10-disc boxed set called Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One — Avengers Assembled which reportedly contains all six films plus exclusive bonus content for a list price of $219. No release date has been listed with this set.
